The J.M. Smucker Company is voluntarily recalling one lot of Natural Balance canned cat food due to potential deadly health concerns.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said cats ingesting the product could suffer nausea with excessive salivation, constricted pupils and poor vision, diarrhea or vomiting, or more severe symptoms like difficulty walking, muscle shaking, tremors, irregular heartbeat, difficulty breathing and possible cardiac or respiratory failure sometimes leading to death.
Pet owners who notice any of these symptoms should call their veterinarian right away, and throw out the potentially deadly cat food.
The affected products include the following information on the bottom of the cans:
· Product Name: Natural Balance® Ultra Premium Chicken & Liver Paté Formula canned cat food
5.5 oz can
· Retail UPC Code: 2363353227
· Lot Code: 9217803
· Best If Used By Date: 08 04 2021
The product is commonly sold in pet specialty stores and online throughout the U.S. and Canada.

News media are reporting the presence of cyanobacteria in the Charles, and it may be present in other areas.
Key points about cyanobacteria:
• Cyanobacteria produce many toxins with the toxin microcystin being the most common.
• Microcystins generally affect the liver. Signs of microcystin toxicity include: nausea, vomiting, icterus, abdominal pain, dark colored urine, inappetance, anorexia, excess drooling, and death.
• The signs of microcystin toxicity are non-specific and toxicity should be a differential diagnosis in any animal with consistent signs and a history of access to ponds, lakes, or other sources of fresh water.
• Cyanobacteria can potentially live in any body of fresh water and the presence of microcystins can only be confirmed by laboratory analysis of a water sample.
• There is no correlation between the appearance of the water (i.e. visible algal scum) and the presence of toxin since significant toxin levels can be present in water that is visibly free of algae.
• Microcystin toxicity usually is the result of ingestion by drinking contaminated water, but ingestion can occur from grooming behavior when the animal’s coat has been contaminated.
• Skin irritation can also occur in pets and livestock that have had contact with toxins, as well as in animal owners who may have handled animals that have toxins on their coats.
• Treatment of toxicity is supportive, there are no specific antidotes.

The National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) announced 6/2/20 the first confirmed case of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) infection in a pet dog (German shepherd) in New York state. This is the first dog in the United States to test positive for SARS-CoV-2.
The dog is expected to make a full recovery. One of the dog's owners tested positive for COVID-19. A second dog in the household has shown no signs of illness; however, antibodies were also identified in that dog, suggesting exposure.
At this time, routine testing of animals is not recommended. We are still learning about SARS-CoV-2 in animals, but there is currently no evidence that animals play a significant role in spreading the virus.
For more information about COVID-19 and animals and recommendations for pet owners, visit https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/animals/pets-other-animals.html
